On Monday August 6 the Magic Castle paid tribute to the Los Angeles Fire Department by hosting more than 100 firefighters at a special magical event. On duty and off duty firefighters both attended the tribute. The firefighters deserved every bit of this attention, as these heroes saved the Castle on a day that will long be remembered. It was October 31, 2011 — Halloween Day — and the Magic Castle staff was having some minor repairs performed on its roof. The roofer was melting some tar on the Castle’s roof, when he accidentally caught the building on fire. Smoke billowed from the roof and attic. Within minutes there were dozens of Los Angeles firefighters on the scene. The fire was quickly put out, though there was significant water damage to the structure. Fortunately, most of the priceless pieces of history displayed at the Castle suffered little or no damage, thanks to the proactive actions taken by the firefighters to protect artifacts from water damage.
The Castle was shut down for several days and partially reopened on Friday, November 4. After that, repairs and upgrades took until January 13, 2012. On that day, the Magic Castle reopened at 100 percent functionality. The staff and members of the Magic Castle will be forever grateful to the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department for acting so quickly, conscientiously and professionally — and for recognizing the Castle’s historic value.
About the Magic Castle
The Magic Castle is a private club for magicians and is the clubhouse for members of the Academy of Magical Arts. The Magic Castle was opened in 1963 by brothers William and Milt Larsen and has promoted the art of Magic since that time nearly 50 years ago. The Castle’s distinct Victorian design comes out of its history. Originally a private home built in 1908 by banker Rollin Lane, it has majestically looked over Hollywood, California, from a hillside for more than a century. The home was originally known as the Lane Mansion.
Currently, The Magic Castle is open seven days a week and is normally available only to members and their guests. Magic Castle performances feature internationally famous magicians offering all kinds of magic, from close-up sleight of hand demonstrations to stage shows. The Magic Castle is a private club.
